Western Isles Council in renewables firm plan

An islands council plans to set up a company to invest in renewable energy projects and sell the electricity locally and to mainland markets.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's proposed Hebrides Energy Supply Company could invest in a wind farm planned by the Stornoway Trust.

The Western Isles does not yet have a link to the mainland for exporting electricity generated on the isles.

Connections are planned, including a subsea hub off Barra.
