Police saw Inverness man drinking beer while driving, court hears

Police pursued a motorist after they spotted him drinking from a can of beer while he drove, a court has heard.

Alexander Nugent, 32, evaded officers by driving at 50mph through 30mph zones in Inverness and running a red light on a blind corner on 27 May last year.

Nugent, from Inverness, handed himself into a police station two days later.

Appearing at Inverness Sheriff Court, he was banned from driving for three years and ordered to carry out 300 hours community service.

Nugent, who admitted dangerous driving, has two previous convictions for drink-driving, the court heard.

Sheriff Ian Abercrombie ordered him to sit an extended driving test on completion of the ban.
