Seven people were airlifted to hospital after their people carrier crashed into a loch on Harris in the Western Isles.

The accident happened on the A859, about one mile north of the Luskentyre road at about 16:00 on Monday.

Two people, thought to be in their 80s, were airlifted to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, on Lewis, with head and facial injuries.

The Stornoway Coastguard helicopter then returned for the other five, thought to include three children.

They were described as "walking wounded".

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said the vehicle had landed on its side in a small loch and the road had been badly affected by surface water.
