A survey has gathered support for calls to reintroduce a ferry service between Lochboisdale in South Uist and Mallaig on the mainland.

The route, axed in the 1990s, would involve a shorter crossing than is offered on the current Lochboisdale to Oban sailing.

The Missing Link Campaign Group and the Hebrides Range Task Force jointly commissioned the survey.

They said 89% of 1,109 respondents said they would use the ferry service.

Also, 84% of the 1,010 who responded online and 99 using paper forms believed it would deliver economic benefits.

The Hebrides Range Task force involves local authority Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

It was set up in 2009 to fight threatened job cuts at military rocket test facilities on the Western Isles.

Comments gathered in the survey will be submitted to the Scottish government's ferry review consultation.

Task force chairman Angus Campbell said: "This is a significant piece of work that clearly demonstrates overwhelming community support for the introduction of a new Lochboisdale-Mallaig ferry service.

"Equally importantly, it shows clear prospects for economic renewal for the local economy if the service is introduced."
