Bothies planned for Caledonian Canal
Scottish Canals has proposed making small bothies available to visitors to the Caledonian Canal and Great Glen.
The organisation said they would offer something different from what was already provided at local campsites, bed and breakfasts and hotels.
The newspaper, the Inverness Courier, has reported opposition to the plan among some accommodation providers.
The bothies would be similar in design to a prototype set up at a site on the Forth and Clyde Canal.
Keith Mackie, development surveyor at Scottish Canals, said there had been consultation on the proposal.
He said: "We have had several meetings with the residents and local businesses of the area and have altered our plans as a result of the feedback we received.
"We want to assure the community our aim is not to compete with existing operators - the bothies are intended to offer something new and unique in the area."
He added: "We have offered all businesses the opportunity to work with us to maximise the value of the project for everyone and we have had local support."
