Firefighters rescue man on roof during blaze in Thurso

A man climbed onto the roof of a block of flats in Thurso to escape a fire in a first floor property of the building.

Two Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) appliances from Thurso and one from Wick were called to the scene at 04:53.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze in Bayview Terrace and rescued the man.

The SFRS said the fire was "well developed" when the crews arrived at the scene.

Station manager Steven Bassindale said: "Crews were faced with an intense fire and they worked extremely hard to tackle it quickly and effectively.

"The conditions were arduous for the crews who faced extreme heat and thick smoke."

The SFRS and Police Scotland have begun an investigation into the cause of the fire.
