Teenage crewman lost hand in fishing boat accident

A junior deckhand had a hand amputated after an accident on a scallop dredger.

In a new report, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said the 18-year-old's hand was damaged while he was operating a trawl winch.

The accident on the Wanderer II happened on 19 November 2013 off Wiay Island in the Western Isles.

The deckhand was airlifted to hospital but medical staff were unable to save his badly damaged hand.

In the report, the MAIB said the owner of the dredger had made safety modifications to the equipment.

It added: "Recommendations have been made to Wanderer II's owner aimed at further improving the safety of winch operations on board.

"Recommendations have also been made to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Fishing Industry Safety Group designed to improve guidance on the safe operation of winches and other deck machinery."
