Man stole car and van to get from Highlands to Barnsley

A man who stole a car and a van and got lost in snow while trying to get home to Barnsley from the Highlands has been jailed for 32 months.

Andrew Ridsdale got as far as Kingussie on a trip in January this year, Inverness Sheriff Court heard.

He stole a car from nearby Kincraig but abandoned it following a puncture and getting lost down a snowy track.

Ridsdale, 32, then hitchhiked to Lochaline where he stole a van. Police found him in the vehicle near his home.

The court heard that he was banned for life from driving in 2002.

The court was told Ridsdale had stolen the car and van after failing to find overnight accommodation near Kingussie and Lochaline during 16 and 17 January.
