The operator of the CairnGorm Mountain snowsports centre, near Aviemore, has announced plans to offer more summer-time pursuits at the site.

Natural Retreats said it plans to phase in a number of improvements.

Among these is creating areas for mountain bikers and the company is working with a business involved in Canada's Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

The ski centre in the Cairngorms National Park is owned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

In summer, the site generates business from its funicular railway and guided walks.

Natural Retreats said it wants to give the site greater year-round appeal and has also proposed a revamp of buildings and facilities at CairnGorm Mountain.

Subject to planning approval, work could begin on elements of the business' masterplan in 2017.

It said that due to the sensitive location - the Cairngorms are an important natural habitat - and the importance of the winter sports season to the local economy, it was anticipated that construction works would be phased across two summers.

Other Scottish snowsports centres, such as Nevis Range near Fort William and Glencoe Mountain, already offer opportunities for mountain biking.
