Ellon Academy in Aberdeenshire evacuated after gas leak

Hundreds of pupils were forced to leave an Aberdeenshire school following a gas leak.

The pupils from Ellon Academy were taken to a nearby building as a precaution, before going home.

The gas networks agency, Transco, said engineers had been dispatched to assist, and the leak was repaired during the afternoon.

Ellon Academy, which has more than 1,000 pupils, is expected to re-open on Wednesday.

An Aberdeenshire Council spokesman said: "A strong smell of gas was detected in an external building on the newer of the two sites that make up Ellon Academy at around 11.30am.

"The school was evacuated in line with usual procedures as a precaution."

Grampian Police said Union Street in Ellon had also been closed as a precaution.
