Four men have gone on trial accused of murdering a man during a street disturbance in Morayshire.

Stephen Johnston, 37, died following the early morning incident on 24 June last year in Elgin's Lesmurdie Road.

Jamie Nicol, 25, Daniel McArthur, 21, and brothers 23-year-old Andrew Wilson and Dale Wilson, 26, all deny charges of murdering him.

The men also deny attempting to murder another man, Derek Simpson, hours earlier in Blackburn.

They are accused of repeatedly striking Mr Simpson on the head with a hammer and striking his body with a knife at a children's playpark in the village on the outskirts of Aberdeen.

The trial before Lord Uist is expected to last five weeks.
