A fire at a former primary school in Aberdeen was started deliberately, police have said.

The blaze at Causewayend Primary School, which happened at about 1440 BST on Friday, caused significant damage to the building.

Surrounding streets were also closed while the fire was brought under control.

Det Con John Webster, of Grampian Police, said there had been reports of youths congregating in the area.

"Inquiries are ongoing into the cause of the fire but it would appear the fire had been deliberately set to cause damage to the school," he said.

"Parents are asked to be aware of where their children are and what they are up to.

"They should ensure their children are aware of the dangers of playing with fire.

"Thankfully there was no-one injured but it could easily have had more serious consequences, not just to those who started the fire but to firefighters who attended to extinguish the blaze."
