Union warning over Aberdeenshire pupil assistant plan

Pupils could suffer if Aberdeenshire Council presses ahead with plans to cut up to 180 pupil assistant posts, a union has warned.

The change would see the creation of a single pupil support assistant role, replacing four existing titles.

Kate Ramsden, Unison's Aberdeenshire branch officer, said staff were already under pressure and the new move could make a bad situation worse.

The council said the service needed modernised, without pupils suffering.

The local authority said it was addressing a significant budget overspend on school support, while aiming to avoid compulsory redundancies.
