An Orkney cattle herder is using GPS tracking technology in an attempt to rejuvenate an area of hill land.

Local stockman Duncan Reid has been employed by the RSPB for a three-month trial in the hope his work will in turn boost the local bird population.

It is hoped the grazing of Mr Reid's cattle can help turn the land into suitable habitat for birds.

Both Mr Reid and the small herd of cattle are fitted with GPS devices in the Birsay moors.

The data will be downloaded to assess if the herd can be managed without the need for new fencing.
