An Aberdeenshire teacher who has helped raise almost £100,000 for Children in Need is set to retire after 37 years.

Ella Egan, 60, from Banchory, has taught English at Aboyne Academy over four decades and will retire as a principal teacher on 23 December.

She has co-ordinated Children in Need fundraising activities at the school for the past 23 years, raising more than £96,000.

Rector Raymond Jowett said: "She is a pretty remarkable character."

Her fundraising efforts featured on this year's Children in Need television coverage.

The retiring teacher said: "It was fantastic to gain some special recognition for the school this year.

"I am so proud of all our pupils, past and present, who have done so much to achieve our targets. They are the real heroes of Children in Need and Aboyne Academy."
