Man in court for 'attempted murder' after Elgin fire

A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a fire in Elgin left a resident in hospital with serious injuries.

The burned man, in his 60s, and four other people were taken to hospital following the incident in the Kingsmills area of the Moray town.

Grampian Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the flat, one of a block of four, at about 19:20 on Monday.

John MacDonald, 42, of Forres, made no plea at Elgin Sheriff Court.

He was remanded in custody.
