Club president Ruth Wright led them to victory on the River Dee on Saturday.

She told the BBC Scotland news website: "We expected to win, I don't think everybody expected us to."

She added: "We pulled away and we knew we could do it. We are ecstatic.

"It was a brilliant feeling."

Hugh Little, of sponsors Aberdeen Asset Management, said: "The build-up to this year's race has been amongst the most competitive we've seen in the history of the race.

"Our congratulations go to both teams for their sportsmanship and showing what great sporting talent exists in both universities."
