Accountant who embezzled £1.2m jailed for five years

An accountant who embezzled more than £1.2m from an oil business has been jailed for five years.

David Johnston, 41, admitted taking £1,246,917 from Aberdeen-based Capelrig Ltd.

A proof in mitigation hearing was held at Peterhead Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Gregor Murray said: "As an accountant you were trusted more than other employees. You extremely abused that trust."

The court heard that none of the money had been paid back, and was not likely to be reclaimed because of Johnston being declared bankrupt.
