A man who said he took a stun gun from an Aberdeen nightclub - after mistaking it for a mobile phone - has been jailed for five years.

Father-of-two David Thompson, 35, said he only later realised what the device was.

Thompson was caught with it and charged under the Firearms Act.

He pled guilty to the charge at Stonehaven Sheriff Court and received the minimum sentence.

Sheriff Christopher Shead said: "I have reached the conclusion that there are no exceptional circumstances in this case.

"I have got no choice but to look at a minimum term."
