Orkney Ferries overtime 'tops £1m over past five years'

Orkney Ferries has paid out more than £1m in overtime payments to staff over the past five years, it has emerged.

The majority of the money was used to fund what is termed call back, where staff come back to work during their time off to cover for colleagues.

Call back has been at the centre of recent industrial unrest with crews refusing to cover while an outstanding pay claim remains unresolved.

It has led to service disruption.

Figures from Orkney Islands Council show that more than £4,500 a week was paid out in overtime last year.
