Power has been restored on five Orkney islands following a blackout which affected almost 1,000 homes.

The power cut happened on the remote islands of North Ronaldsay, Eday, Shapinsay, Stronsay and Sanday at about 04:30 on Friday.

Engineers from energy firm SSE were restoring supplies throughout the day and said the last of the customers were reconnected at midnight.

The blackout was caused by damage to a subsea electricity cable.

Power was restored to Shapinsay after emergency generators were shipped to the island, while North Ronaldsay was being powered by its own generator.

The other islands were reconnected later.

The Orkney local emergency co-ordinating group, which met on Friday morning, had said it expected the impact of the power cut to be minimal.

Mobile phone networks in the area may have experienced some disruption, but landlines and the 999 service were unaffected.
