A man reported missing from a North Sea ferry has been named.

Craig Townsley, 22, of Saltcoats in North Ayrshire, was last seen at about 03:30 on Monday on the ferry Hjaltland travelling from Lerwick to Aberdeen.

A major air and sea search was launched, with Hjaltland retracing its east coast route, joined by lifeboats, commercial vessels and a helicopter.

The rescue helicopter and lifeboats were stood down at 20:30 on Monday.

Det Insp Stewart Mackie said: "Our officers are still treating this as a missing person enquiry which remains ongoing.

"However, our initial enquiries indicate that Mr Townsley may have gone overboard."
