A man who pointed a deactivated pistol at a woman before robbing her of her purse and mobile phone in Aberdeen has been jailed for five years.

Peter Smart, 38, targeted Annette Hadden in Cairngorm Place in May.

Smart was convicted of two charges after a trial at the High Court in Aberdeen earlier this year.

Judge Lord Kinclaven told Smart at the High Court in Edinburgh that custody was the only disposal available in the case.

Det Insp Lorna Ferguson, who led the inquiry, said: "This would have been an absolutely terrifying experience for the victim involved and it is fortunate that the consequences were not worse.

"I would welcome the sentence given to Smart today and reinforce the message that crimes such as these will not be tolerated.

"I would also like to thank those within the community who came forward to assist police during the investigation."
