Banchory farmer Ella Thom jailed for £650,000 VAT fraud

An Aberdeenshire farmer who admitted a VAT fraud of more than £650,000 has been jailed for two years and three months.

Ella Thom, 49, from Banchory, submitted fraudulent VAT repayment claims for more than six years.

It related to the costs of machinery, fertiliser, and business charges.

HM Revenue and Customs said Thom was now paying a very high price for taking what she "wrongly assumed would be easy money".

She was jailed at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
