Aberdeen City Council's former leader has described his "surprise" at being ousted.

Barney Crockett has been replaced as leader of the Labour group by Jenny Laing.

He told BBC Radio Scotland: "I was in Houston and got a phone call that I was leaving.

"It's a big surprise, but that's politics - if you want a friend, get a dog."

Ten votes

Mr Crockett explained: "There certainly had been no discussion of any misgivings. There is an element of puzzlement.

"I have been willing to stand up for what I think.

"Our population is growing. It's become a real prize to lead the city. It was a huge honour."

BBC Scotland understands Mr Crockett lost his post by 10 votes to six at the Labour group annual general meeting on Monday evening.
