Vytautas Melinauskas jailed for eight years for New Elgin rape

A man who raped a 13-year-old girl in Moray has been jailed for eight years.

Vytautas Melinauskas, 43, of New Elgin, was found guilty of the assault which happened in his flat in 2012.

He was convicted of raping the girl while she was incapable of giving or withholding consent due to the effects of alcohol.

Judge Lord Burns told the High Court in Edinburgh it was clear the rape had affected the girl very badly.

'Genuinely sorry'

Lithuanian Melinauskas was also convicted of committing a sex act with a 15-year-old girl.

Defence advocate Bill Adam described Melinauskas as "rather lonely man" who sometimes drank to excess.

Mr Adam said: "He is genuinely sorry for the girls and for the distress that he has caused.

"He knows he was the adult. They were the children. He should have known better as far as the alcohol and everything else which followed was concerned."

He will be deported at the end of his jail term.
