The former head of the Gucci Group is to join the board of spirits firm William Grant & Sons.

The Speyside-based distillers said they had appointed Robert Polet as a non-executive director.

Mr Polet will join the board from 1 September.

Mr Polet was chief executive and president of the Gucci Group for seven years until he left the European fashion company earlier this year in a surprise reorganisation.

During his time at Gucci, he developed and built brands such as Stella McCartney, Yves Saint Laurent, Boucheron and Alexander McQueen.

He was previously president of Unilever's worldwide ice cream and frozen foods division.

William Grant & Sons chairman Peter Gordon, said: "Robert has a special track record of leading and developing luxury brands, which will be valuable to our board as we continue our journey to make our brands the envy of the spirits industry.

"We look forward to Robert contributing to the board as a non-executive director, and also to his participation in strategic projects as agreed with our chief executive, Stella David."

William Grant, which produces a range of brands including Glenfiddich, Tullamore Dew and Hendrick's gin, is based in Dufftown.
