Water resource laws passed by MSPs

New laws to manage Scotland's water resources have been passed by MSPs.

The legislation will extend the functions of utility Scottish Water to protect the public sewerage network and make water shortage orders.

Ministers also hope countries less fortunate than Scotland can benefit from its experience.

But they insisted water shortages around the world would never be exploited for economic gain.

The Water Resources (Scotland) Bill, which covers a broad range of areas relating to water and sewerage services, was passed unanimously by parliament

Separately, the Scottish government has committed to keeping Scottish Water in public ownership.
