The SNP has held a seat on Dundee City Council following a by-election.

Lynne Short won the Maryfield ward seat vacated by Craig Melville, who resigned while under investigation for allegedly sending anti-Islamic texts.

Ms Short was elected at stage three of the vote having won just under half of first-preference votes. Turnout was 24%.

The result means the SNP has won 28 out of 31 council by-elections contested since May 2015.

Mr Melville, formerly environment convener as well as an aide to SNP deputy leader Stewart Hosie, resigned in February saying the pressures of the racism probe were having an adverse affect on his health.
