Canonbie pensioner in critical condition after crash

A 76-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash on a minor road in the Scottish Borders.

The incident happened at about 1340 BST on Sunday on the B6357 Newcastleton to Canonbie road about one mile south of Newcastleton.

The man's Fiat Panda car was in collision with an empty logging lorry.

Once the pensioner, from Canonbie, was freed from his vehicle he was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary for treatment to his injuries.

The driver of the lorry was unhurt and police have appealed for any motorists who were on the road at the time of the incident to contact them.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This collision has left one man in an extremely serious condition in hospital and we are eager to hear from anyone who may have information that can assist our investigation.

"We are continuing with our enquiries to determine the circumstances surrounding this collision and would urge anyone who may have witnessed it to come forward."
