Galashiels man admits punching his mother unconscious

A Galashiels man has admitted beating his mother unconcious and threatening to kill her.

Niall Gray, 20, repeatedly punched and kicked her on the head and body during the incident at a flat in Beech Avenue, Galashiels, on 9 June.

He also forced a knife against her throat.

Gray was initially charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of assault to severe injury. He will be sentenced in August.

The 20-year-old, who was on bail from Edinburgh Sheriff Court at the time and the subject of an Asbo, also admitted a breach of the peace charge by threatening to kill his mother and also threatening to stab and kill two police officers.

Sentence was deferred at Selkirk Sheriff Court until 16 August and Gray was remanded in custody.
