Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin is helping launch the Wigtown Book Festival with his debut appearance at the event.

He joins a long list of guest authors ranging from politicians such as Margo MacDonald to sports personalities like former Scotland goalkeeper Andy Goram.

The festival at Scotland's national book town runs until 3 October.

Director Adrian Turpin said that despite the challenging financial climate ticket sales remained strong.

More than 170 events will take place over the 10 days of the Dumfries and Galloway festival.
