Woman, 81, assaulted in Hawick home raid

Police have launched an investigation after an 81-year-old woman was assaulted during an break-in to her home in the Borders.

The incident happened at 0545 BST on Friday in the Millpath area of Hawick.

The pensioner was in her bed when she became aware of noise coming from her living room.

A man then came into her bedroom and demanded money before struggling with her and pushing her to the floor. She suffered minor injuries as a result.

Police have issued a description of the man who fled the property after the incident.

'Frightening ordeal'

He is 18 to 20 years old, 6ft tall, with dark hair, a "skinny" build and a drawn, gaunt face. He was wearing dark clothing.

A police spokesman said: "This was a frightening ordeal for the victim, who suffered a minor injury to her left shoulder as a result of her being pushed to the floor.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Millpath at the time of the incident, who saw the suspect acting suspiciously there, to get in touch as a matter of urgency.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises his description, or who has any other information that can help our inquiries, should also get in touch."
