A court has heard how a Borders man had his electricity meter bypassed to get free power to grow his own cannabis.

Cameron Torrie, 38, now of Hamilton Road, Hawick, was caught when a leaking pipe in his flat set water pouring into shop premises in the town's Howgate.

When police officers burst into the building on 29 December last year they found a small cannabis growing system.

Torrie admitted producing the drugs and getting someone to tamper with the electricity supply.

At Jedburgh Sheriff Court, sentence was deferred until 25 November for background reports.
