Police have launched an investigation into an attempted break-in at a post office in the south of Scotland.

It happened almost five years to the day after the Kirkcudbright branch was the target of another raid.

The latest attempt was made at about 2330 GMT on Saturday night when thieves tried to get in through the roof.

They were scared off when an alarm sounded but police have appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them with information.

In November 2005 thieves made off with tens of thousands of pounds in cash, stamps and postal orders from the office.

This time around the break-in was aborted but the raid tried to use a similar point of entry.

Police called out to the property on St Cuthbert's Place found slates removed from the roof.

They want to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity near the building at the time of the incident.
