Dumfries gas escape prompts school closure

A primary school in the south of Scotland has been shut following reports of a "gas escape" in the area.

Pupils have been sent home from St Teresa's RC Primary at Lochside in Dumfries as a result of the incident.

Dumfries and Galloway Council said the leak had been noticed by workmen digging a wall near the school as part of improvement work.

The school, which has a roll of about 200, was closed because the leak was so near to the building.

A council statement said repair work had been carried out and it appeared the problem had been solved.

The school will reopen on Monday.
