A 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car in the Scottish Borders.

The accident happened on the A68 in Jedburgh, near the swimming pool bridge, at about 1715 GMT on Thursday.

The girl, who was walking, was hit by the silver Honda Civic, which stopped at the scene.

She has been transferred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh where her condition was described as "critical but stable".

Lothian and Borders Police has appealed for witnesses to the accident to contact them.

A spokesperson said: "We would have expected the area to be quite busy in the early evening last night.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who was there, and who saw what happened, to come forward."
