Police have appealed for witnesses after a 76-year-old woman was robbed of her pension while walking home in Dumfries.

The incident happened at about 0715 BST on Monday on the town's Brooms Road.

The woman who carried out the attack has been described as being about 20 years old, of slim build with shoulder-length, dark hair in a ponytail.

Police said she made off with a three-figure sum of money and left her victim "shaken but uninjured".

The robber was wearing a black, knee-length coat, black trousers and possibly a pink top.

Det Con Joyce Adams said: "Even though these incidents are rare in Dumfries and Galloway it was still a cowardly attack on an elderly member of the public.

"The lady collected her pension at the Post Office on St Michael Street and we believe the female responsible followed her home with every intention of taking the cash.

"We are talking about an opportunistic robbery targeting a vulnerable person walking home alone."
