Galashiels teenager who abused sister given probation

An 18-year-old who sexually abused his 10-year-old sister while their mother was out working has been given probation and placed on the sex offenders register for three years.

The Galashiels man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared on indictment at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

He admitted the offences at a house in the Borders on three occasions between 1 August and 10 September last year.

The youth was said to be very ashamed and remorseful over his behaviour.

The court heard the accused had told his sister not to tell anyone but she had eventually broken down and told her mother as she helped her with homework.

When he was confronted by his mother, the teenager admitted what he had done and was told to pack his bags and leave the family home.
