Melrose woman dies while driving near Innerleithen

A 67-year-old woman has died while driving on the A72 in the Scottish Borders.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene of the crash, south of Innerleithen, at about 1020 BST.

The victim has been identified as Patricia McNay, from Melrose, who was travelling in a grey Ford Fiesta.

The road was closed for about three hours causing lengthy tailbacks on one of the main routes through the region but it has since reopened.

It is understood Ms McNay took ill shortly before the crash.

A police spokesman said: "We are still trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding Ms McNay's death and would ask for any members of the public who can help with our investigation to come forward.

"Anyone who was travelling along the A72 and remembers seeing her grey Fiesta on the road and can provide us with further information is asked to contact police immediately."
