A teacher who performed a sex act on a teenage pupil has been suspended by the profession's governing body.

Andrew Beattie, 61, of Hawick, also admitted downloading indecent images of children when he appeared in court earlier this year.

Sentence for the offences has twice been deferred.

Beattie, who taught at Selkirk High School for over 30 years, will now face a full disciplinary hearing and is expected to be struck off.

He failed to appear before a General Teaching Council for Scotland investigating committee, but accepted the temporary suspension order against him by letter.

Jennifer McDonald, representing the GTCS, said the charges were of the "utmost gravity" and "may well lead to Mr Beattie being removed from the (teaching) register".

She added: "A temporary suspension order would provide protection to children."

Linda Gray, who chaired the committee, said it had decided suspension was "appropriate".

"We feel it is necessary for the protection of pupils," she said.

"Mr Beattie has accepted the temporary suspension order has been put in place."

A full GTCS disciplinary hearing will take place following Beattie's sentencing, which is expected to be later this month.
