Two killed in separate crashes on A75

Two people have died in separate road accidents on the A75 in Dumfries and Galloway on Wednesday.

John Scott, 82, of Gatehouse of Fleet, was killed when his red Volkswagen Golf crashed near Twynholm.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary have appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened on the A75 Gretna to Stranraer road at about 1800 BST.

A 22-year-old man also died in another single-vehicle accident west of Newton Stewart just before midnight.

Police said a black Vauxhall Vectra car, with a distinctive silver coloured bonnet, left the road ending up in nearby marshland.

A specialist water rescue team from Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene and cut the victim free from the vehicle but he died at the scene.

A second man in the car was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, where he was treated for bruising and shock.

The road was closed for several hours but has since re-opened.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the two crashes.
