A major fire at the Wicken Fen food factory at Duns in the Borders has left a 37-year-old man dead.

The alarm was raised just after 2300 BST on Sunday, after flames took hold in the building at Duns Industrial Park in Station Road.

Wicken Fen is a producer of meat-free products, supplying supermarkets and specialist stores throughout the UK.

At the height of the blaze, 60 firefighters were at the scene. The man has been named locally as Brian Newton.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: "It was a single storey building.

"One part was a carpet factory and the second part was a food factory. The fire was in the food processing part of the factory."

A police and fire investigation is now under way.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "Tragically, this fire has resulted in a fatality and we are now investigating along with Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue to establish the events that led to a man's death.

"Anyone with information that can assist with the investigation is asked to contact police immediately."

The fire was brought under control by about 0500 BST.
