About 40 jobs are to go after the Co-op confirmed plans to shut two Somerfield sites in southern Scotland.

The food store in Lockerbie and petrol station in Annan will close on 28 September.

A company spokesman said the decision to shut the facilities had been taken with "the greatest reluctance".

He added that "every effort" would be made to redeploy staff within the Co-operative group or find them alternative employment.

"The closures are due to the stores' poor trading performance," he said.

"They are not, in any way, a reflection on the commitment and hard work of the store teams.

"The Co-operative food store in Butts Street, Annan, and the Co-operative petrol filling station in Carlisle Road, Lockerbie, are both unaffected and will continue trading."
