Late Scotland player Billy Houliston's medals stolen

Football medals belonging to former Scotland international Billy Houliston have been taken during a "high value" break-in.

The incident occurred at the family home in Glencaple some time between 11:00 and 22:00 on Thursday.

Mr Houliston, who died in 1999, played three times for his country in the late 1940s.

A substantial amount of cash and some items of jewellery were also taken in the incident.

Det Con Euan Cowan said the items taken were of significant sentimental value to the family.

"The medals relate to the footballing career of the late Billy Houliston who was a Queen of the South player and a Scotland international," he said.

"They were from his footballing time from 1948 and into the 1950s.

"We are keen to speak to anybody who is offered these for sale or sees anything like this going around to contact the police and let us know."

Mr Houliston played for Scotland in three matches in the late 1940s, including a victory over England at Wembley in 1949.
