Teenager dies after car hits tree in Scottish Borders

A teenager has died and another man has been seriously injured after a car came off the road and hit a tree on New Year's Day.

The crash happened on the A697 road in the Borders, near Westruther, at about 19:10 on Sunday night.

An 18-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and the 17-year-old driver was taken to hospital after being freed from the Mitsubishi Evo.

The driver's condition has been described as critical.

The road was closed for four and half hours while officers carried out inquiries.

Lothian and Borders Police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.
