Kenny MacAskill meets Dumfries and Galloway police

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has visited Dumfries to discuss plans to create a single national police force.

Mr MacAskill held talks with Dumfries and Galloway Chief Constable Pat Shearer about the reforms.

He also met some probationary officers and officers undertaking firearms training.

The justice minister said he had enjoyed hearing first hand about the work being done throughout the south west of Scotland.

"We are, of course, moving towards the establishment of a single Police Service of Scotland," said Mr MacAskill.

"This will protect the excellent local policing being delivered across Dumfries and Galloway, and give communities more access to specialist and national services wherever and whenever they are needed."
