Hawick and Edinburgh child sex attacker David Cumming faces prison

A man who subjected two young girls to sex assaults in Hawick and Edinburgh has been told to expect a jail term.

David Cumming, 52, of Tranent, East Lothian, preyed on the children - who cannot be named for legal reasons - between August 1985 and June 1990.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how he forced them to perform sex acts on him against their will.

He admitted five charges of sexual abuse and sentence was deferred until 14 June.

Prosecution lawyer Alison Di Rollo told the court that Cumming would buy his victims presents before assaulting them.

She added: "He would regularly buy sweets and he would tell them that it was their little secret."

He was arrested for the offences last year after the girls came forward and tell the police about what happened.

Lord Turnbull said that he needed to have reports about Cumming's character before he could pass sentence.

Allowing him bail, he added: "You should take the time between now and the sentencing hearing to get your affairs in order as the imposition of a lengthy custodial sentence looks most likely."
