David Cumming jailed over sex abuse in Hawick and Edinburgh

A man who sexually abused two young girls in Hawick and Edinburgh has been jailed for six years.

David Cumming, 52, of Tranent, East Lothian, preyed the youngsters between August 1985 and June 1990.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard he tried to buy his victims' silence with gifts and told them it was their "little secret".

Judge Lord Turnbull told Cumming the court had a duty to protect children from predators.

Cumming had earlier admitted five charges of sex abuse.

Lord Turnbull told him: "I accept that the offences to which you have pled guilty took place many years ago and, in some respects, you may now be a different person.

"In particular I accept there is no reason to think you have conducted yourself in a similar way since.

"However, the passage of time does not alter what you did."
