16,000 chickens killed in Port William fire

More than 16,000 chickens have died in a farm fire near Port William in Dumfries and Galloway overnight.

About 25 firefighters fought the blaze for eight hours at Elrig Farm but they were unable to save the chickens or the large poultry shed which was destroyed.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 18:30 on Wednesday.

They were able to stop the fire spreading to nearby buildings but could not save the thousands of birds being housed in the shed.

Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the incident.
